I hope I'm not annoying anybody with the housebuilding topic.

Saba, our flat is only 5 minutes away driving and 10 minutes walking.
Because of the weather (today there's even more snow :silence:) they only put the armoring on to the filigree ceiling, covered it with a tarp and weighed it down on the edges. So the armoring should be protected from snow and wind shouldn't stand a chance.

Now I'm curios for the garage. Do you have a link or photo or something?

I'm thinking about a way, showing you our building process. :eusa_think: Are you happening to have a facebook account?

Today it's freaking cold outside. Soooo, we're going to work at our plot. There was an old concrete slab at the far end. Last fall we spent our time there swinging the pick. Now the concrete slab's gone and made room for a big whole. Last weekend we started (I think, I already mentioned it in another thread) shoveling up the real wet and heavy earth on to the wheelbarrow and filling it in the whole. Great goal is to build a plain plot, which is going to be my garden. (And I'm planning on spending really much time there, playing and working with the boys - my dogs.)
So today despite the cold, we're going to the plot again. I'm curios what's more difficult: Shoveling wet, heavy earth or frozen.

If I'm able to move my arms afterwards, I'm going to report.

Candy: How's a raccoon under your house?

Who is for persons. For things you had to say which ;)

You're right, I didn't notice that :eusa_doh:

I always thought reading English books and something like that would help me to make varied sentences. But you're right, speaking English is also a good way to learn it.
I don't think I would learn how to pronounce the words in English by watching the films because I'm deaf  So I'm always be forcused on the subtitle. Luckily there are many films with subtitles nowadays, I love to watch the films and I never could give it up

I have another question, when do I have to write "the" and when not? Sometimes I'm just not sure, like "reading English books". Actually I thought I have to write "the", if there's a verb before it and a substantive after it. Am I wrong?

Yes Stoffel... it was a raccoon or a cat. I know something lives under there. One time in the morning I saw a raccoon digging in the garbage can. Here are a lot of different wild animals. Raccoons, opossum, we have even coyotes. But I never saw one yet.

You are not annoying with your house, Stoffel. You are right, a yard is such a wonderful thing. Our back yard is full of big trees and unfortunately not fenced in. So I never let the girls play by their selves. The front yard is kinda better... a lot of lawn and stuff to climb on.

  • English only! Beitrag #25
Thank you, Candy.
We're back from work. My back aches, but we made a lot of progress. I learned, frozen soil is much easier to deal with than the wet and heavy kind.

I'm going to fence in the backyard and the frontyard. The boys are terriers. They wouldn't stay on our parcel without it. But you know that having one. I'm also going to separate frontyard and backyard by a door and a little in between fence. (Does anybody know a word for "Zwischenzaun"?) So the boys can't roam freely in the frontyard. Otherwise I would be afraid of them barking at other dogs, they don't like, walking by. So they'll only be in the frontyard in case I'm there with them.

Talking from the warm safety of my living room, I think I would love to see a coyote once.

  • English only! Beitrag #26
Maybe the word could be separating fence. But guess what... I have the same problem with the girls. They would bark at people and other dogs. So it's better to keep them in the back:mrgreen:.

Shila, what kind of job do you have?

  • English only! Beitrag #30
Shila, would you be so kind to tell me about the bread you love that much. What was it's name? Fila de Sao Miguel. What's so special about them?

At my work I usually don't have to speak English. I'm a teacher at primary school, but I don't teach English. I'd English speaking kids in one of my classes twice by now. But then the goal is to teach them German and not to talk with them in English. One of the kids spoke German so well, that I nearly never talked to him in English. The other girl has problems in the understanding, so I'm trying to explain things in English for her. But only having her in class 2 periods a weak this is quite seldom.

Turtle, I never heard about the "Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen". What is this? Where is this? Will you have to travel far? And what did you have to do to be qualified?

Candy, I'm really happy, the boys don't bark at people passing by. They also don't bark at their nearest friends. But that's it. Today one of their biggest enemies walked by, slowly as ever. It's a bitch, she allready tried to bite Tabs twice. So he figured she isn't his friend. I'm sure he would bark at her, if he was in the frontyard while she was passing by. Telling the truth, I myself would like to bark at her and her owner.
And by don't liking her, the boys don't like any Wolfsspitze at all. Lucky me this bread is rare.

Stoffel where are the kids from?

  • English only! Beitrag #32
Oh, Candy, I edited my last post for you. I'm not sure you read it.

Both kids are from the USA. The boy was in my class twice. He came to Germany with his father, who worked on his studies for 3 month. First he was in my class at beginning of the second grade, then he came back for 3 month in third grade. No he's back in the USA. He lives near Ithaca, NY. But I don't really know, where that is. I always have to look it up at map.
The girl isn't in "my" class. I'm only teaching her in ethiks. So I don't know her that well.

  • English only! Beitrag #33
Oops... I didn't see your post Stoffel.
I know your problem. There is a guy in the park who exercises. Hazel always starts to bark and growl. I have no idea why. The owner looks not really nice, but she had never any contact to them.

Your boys are super cute. They would kinda match with my girls;).

So how is the work on the housing going?

  • English only! Beitrag #34
We only worked this morning wheelbarrowing the soil from dirthillok to the far end into the hole. We made progress. Tomorrow were going to do some more. Sitting on the coach I really know what I've done today. And I have to admit, I'm tired.

  • English only! Beitrag #35
I'm tired too. I lay on the couch and do not wanna get up. But in an hour I have to leave for work. The weather is rainy and no sun, so you wanna stay at the couch.

When do you expect do be done with the house?

Turtle, I never heard about the "Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen". What is this? Where is this? Will you have to travel far? And what did you have to do to be qualified?

It is... like a competition:mrgreen:
Usually your english teacher tells you, if you are good enough to be part of it.
You can participate in the languages English, Frensh, Latin... and Spanish (?!) or with two languages.
You have to read out a setted (I don't know the word) text and a free statement.
I will write an exam on thursday. The theme this year is "South Africa". I had to inform about it very good.
We will get different exercises - Writing, reading, vocabulary, about Arfica and so on.
Luckily I won't have to drive away, because many pupels of my school will participate, if only a few have done, I had to drive to
another school.
Yeah... And if you are (reaaaaalllly) good, you will become one of the competitors in the second round. You willl have to write a second exam and so on...
You can read something about it here too:
But all in all it does not metter, if you are good, because you will get a certificate anyway... and that is what I want:mrgreen:

By the way- did I mention that an american hostsister lived here for three weeks? It was a great experience! (My sister visited the USA too)

Please exuse - my written english is not as good:?

You didn't mention. By the way I think your English is great. I enjoy reading it.
Despite you getting the certification anyway I wish you the very best for the competition. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Uh, an english thread :)

I Love th Englich language. It sounds so much better than the German one ^^
I would like to communicate with you to improve my admittedly not very good english.
So, you can call me Bllie. I'm 16 ears old and i own a dog and a hamster.
I go to the 11th grade and I'm learning english for around 6 years.
I love to look films in english, but unfortunatly they're mostly american films. In school we have to talk and write british english, so it's a bit difficult for me. ;)
But luckily I don't have to write my Examination in the subject English, because I have Latin too, so... ;)

Uhm, by the way, I'm considering to go to irelang at least for a few years. Does anyone else like to go to an english Contry for a while (I mean longer than a few weeks ;))? Maybe even Ireland to?

  • English only! Beitrag #39
Ireland is great. I was there, when I was 10... so it's been a while:mrgreen:. So where is your host sister from, Turtle?

  • English only! Beitrag #40
@Stoffel: Oh, thank you! Yours is great too!
I just love English and I think about to choose it as a .. ehm.. I will try:mrgreen::
As a class, where you have to reach a higher level as in normal classes. I will have to choose two in grade 11.
Off-Topic
Do you know the solution?
... I hate paraphrasing :p

@Billie: I really understand your problem. I learned British English in the grades 4 to 8. Now I learn American English... and I am confused very often:roll:
But I don't really like British English so I'm happy not to learn it anymore.
American sounds much better. I don't like "daaaaanz" - I want to be allowed to say "dänz" (dance), if you know what I mean;)
My big dream is it to travel to Australia for a few months after my abitur.
Two of my sister's friends are there right know and it should be..beautiful <3

One more thing I don't like: We are not allowed to write short forms anymore! We learned it for about 5 years: "write short forms!!!" and now?
No short forms anymore. I am puzzled:roll:

EDIT (automatische Beitragszusammenführung)

Rachel is from Michigan.
I'm so happy, we still keep in touch via Facebook and Skype.
I will try to visit here, when I have got enough money... So that will be in...
a few years:mrgreen:
